Archiving Policy

The Journal of Family Medicine, Primary Care and Community Health Indonesia (FPCHI) is committed to the long-term digital preservation of all published content. Ensuring that articles remain permanently accessible — regardless of any future changes to the journal's website, publisher, or technical infrastructure — is a core responsibility of FPCHI as a scholarly publication.

FPCHI employs multiple, complementary archiving strategies to guarantee the integrity, discoverability, and perpetual accessibility of the scholarly record.

Archiving Infrastructure

PKP PN

Decentralised preservation network

Crossref DOI

Permanent article identifiers

Google Scholar

Metadata indexing & caching

Author Self-Archive

1. PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN)

What Is PKP PN?

The PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) is a free, decentralised digital preservation service built into OJS, operated by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). It automatically archives all published content across multiple geographically distributed servers, ensuring content remains accessible even if the journal's own server becomes unavailable.

How It Works

Each published article is automatically packaged in the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) format and distributed to the PKP PN network. This ensures that multiple independent copies of all FPCHI content are maintained across the network, providing robust protection against data loss.

Trigger for Access

The PKP PN preserved copies are not publicly accessible under normal circumstances. They become available for access only if the journal ceases publication or its primary server becomes permanently unavailable — acting as a safety net for the scholarly record.

2. DOI Registration via Crossref

Permanent Digital Object Identifiers

Every article published in FPCHI is assigned a unique, permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) registered with Crossref. DOIs provide stable, persistent links to articles that do not break when websites are restructured or URLs change. Article metadata — including title, authors, abstract, volume, issue, and publication date — is deposited with Crossref and made available to all major academic databases and search engines.

Reference Linking

Through Crossref's reference linking service, all cited references in FPCHI articles are cross-linked to their respective DOIs where available, enhancing discoverability and creating a connected scholarly network that facilitates citation tracking and impact measurement.

3. Indexing and Metadata Caching

Google Scholar

All FPCHI articles are indexed in Google Scholar, which caches metadata and full-text content. Google Scholar's cache provides an additional layer of content preservation and discovery independent of the journal's own server.

GARUDA / IPI

As an Indonesian journal, FPCHI registers and archives article metadata with GARUDA (Garba Rujukan Digital) and the Indonesian Publication Index (IPI), the national repositories maintained by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia.

BASE (Bielefeld)

FPCHI is registered with the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), one of the world's largest search engines for academic web resources, providing additional metadata harvesting and preservation of open-access content.

Internet Archive

The FPCHI website and its published content are periodically crawled and archived by the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine), providing an additional publicly accessible historical record of all published pages and articles.

4. Author Self-Archiving

Authors are strongly encouraged to self-archive the final published version (Version of Record) of their article in their institutional repository, subject-specific repositories (e.g., PubMed Central, medRxiv), or personal academic profiles (e.g., ResearchGate, ORCID). This practice further ensures the long-term accessibility and discoverability of published research and is fully permitted under FPCHI's CC BY 4.0 open access licence with no embargo period. Authors should always include the original DOI link when self-archiving.

5. Archival File Formats

PDF/A

All published articles are archived in PDF/A format — the ISO-standardised version of PDF designed for long-term archiving, which embeds all fonts and metadata within the file.

XML / HTML

Where available, structured XML (JATS format) and HTML versions of articles are preserved to ensure machine readability and compatibility with future technologies and indexing systems.

Metadata (XML)

Structured article metadata is preserved in Dublin Core and JATS XML formats and deposited with Crossref and indexing services to ensure discoverability independent of the article's full text.

6. Compliance and Standards

FPCHI's archiving policy is aligned with the following standards and best practices:

PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN / LOCKSS) Crossref DOI Registration DOAJ Archiving Requirements GARUDA / IPI (Indonesia) Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) ISO 19005 PDF/A Archival Standard NISO JATS XML Standard
